March Vision-First Campaign: Raising Awareness and Inviting Our Community to Serve

Good vision shapes how children learn, how seniors stay independent, and how families thrive.

And here in Blount County, the need is closer than many people realize.

Who We Are

The Maryville Lions Club has served Blount County since 1938. As part of Lions Clubs International, we share a global mission: protecting and restoring sight. But our work is deeply local — focused on the neighbors we see at the grocery store, in church, and at school pickup lines.

What We’re Focusing On This Month

This March, we are launching a Vision-First Awareness Campaign to shine a light on the real vision challenges facing our community and to invite others to be part of the solution.

Local data tells an important story:

  • Over 10,000 students attend public schools in Blount County.

  • More than 21% of our residents are age 65 or older.

  • Many families face financial barriers that delay eye care.

When a child cannot see clearly, learning becomes harder than it needs to be. When a

senior experiences untreated vision decline, independence and safety can be at risk. When families delay care due to cost, small problems can grow into bigger ones.

The good news? Many vision issues are treatable — especially when detected early.

Why This Matters

We’ve seen firsthand what happens when someone receives the help they need.

As one Blount County parent shared after her daughter received glasses:

“Lucy’s new glasses were a lifesaver. The difference was instant — grades improved and her confidence soared. Thank you, Lions!”

That’s not just about eyesight. That’s about confidence, opportunity, and dignity.

And that’s why we serve.

How We Respond

The Maryville Lions Club supports vision-focused service through:

  • Local vision screening support

  • Assistance with eye exams and basic eyewear for those who qualify

  • Partnerships with healthcare providers and community organizations

  • Ongoing awareness efforts to catch issues early

It’s steady, practical service — powered entirely by volunteers who care about this community.

No grandstanding. No spotlight needed. Just neighbors helping neighbors.

When and How You Can Get Involved

Throughout this month, you’ll see more about the real impact of vision care in Blount County — and how you can help strengthen it.

If protecting sight in our community matters to you, there is a place for you here.

Membership in the Maryville Lions Club includes modest annual dues and a manageable time commitment. You don’t need special expertise — just a willingness to serve and a heart for this community.

Helping others doesn’t just change lives. It strengthens the entire community — including the people doing the helping.
