The Maryville Lions Club joined forces with other local service organizations and A Place to Stay to make a meaningful impact during the recent Street Outreach Service (SOS) Day. This quarterly gathering, held at New Providence Presbyterian Church, focuses on supporting the underprivileged members of the Blount County community.

Bringing Vision Care to Those in Need
One of the key services provided by the Maryville Lions during SOS Day was vision support. Many individuals in the community face challenges accessing affordable eye care, which affects their daily lives and opportunities. The Lions distributed reading glasses to attendees, helping those with vision difficulties to read, work, and engage more fully in their activities.
Beyond handing out glasses, the Lions also scheduled eye exam appointments for participants. This step ensures that individuals receive professional assessments and prescriptions tailored to their needs. By connecting people with eye care providers, the event helps prevent vision problems from worsening and supports overall health.
Nourishing the Community with Fortified Meals

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Blount County. To address this, the event included the distribution of power bars and meal packets by the Lions (these packets contained fortified pasta with tomato sauce designed to provide essential nutrients and energy. The choice of fortified pasta is practical and thoughtful, offering a shelf-stable, easy-to-prepare meal that can support individuals and families facing food shortages. Second harvest distributed various bags of produce and a hot meal was served to all in attendance as well.
Volunteers ensured that each person received enough to help sustain them until their next meal. This effort not only alleviates hunger but also contributes to better nutrition, which is vital for health and resilience.
Collaboration Among Service Organizations

SOS Day is a collaborative effort that brings together multiple service groups, each contributing their unique strengths. The partnership between the Maryville Lions, A Place to Stay, and other organizations creates a network of support that extends beyond a single event. Even Operation Vet Rescue and Mascot Cloud were in attendance to assist Veterans in need.
A Place to Stay focuses on providing shelter and resources for those experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Their involvement ensures that participants receive guidance and assistance related to housing needs. Meanwhile, the Lions focus on health and vision, and other groups may offer clothing, hygiene products, or counseling.
This teamwork allows the event to address a wide range of challenges faced by the community, making the outreach more comprehensive and effective.
The Importance of Quarterly Outreach
Holding SOS Day every quarter at New Providence Presbyterian Church establishes a reliable rhythm of support for Blount County’s vulnerable populations. Regular events build trust and familiarity, encouraging more people to seek help and participate.
The church’s central location provides a welcoming and accessible venue. Volunteers and organizers can plan ahead, ensuring that resources and services are well-coordinated. This consistency also allows the community to track progress and identify ongoing needs.
Stories from the Day
During the recent SOS Day, several moments stood out that illustrate the event’s impact:
A senior citizen who had struggled with blurry vision received reading glasses and an appointment for a full eye exam. She expressed relief and gratitude, saying she could now read her mail and medication labels clearly.
A young father picked up meal packets and power bars for his family. He shared that these supplies would help them through a tough week while he searched for work.
Volunteers from different organizations exchanged ideas and formed new connections, strengthening the local support network.
These stories highlight how practical help and human connection come together during SOS Day.
How You Can Support Future Events
