From Awareness to Action: Join the Maryville Lions Club

Throughout March, we’ve shared stories about something many people don’t realize until it touches someone close to home:
Vision challenges are more common in Blount County than we think—and they change lives.
A child who can’t see the board may quietly fall behind in school.
A senior with declining vision may begin to lose independence—driving less, reading less, getting out less.
And many families delay care simply because access or cost gets in the way.
The need is real. And it’s local.
The encouraging part? Many of these challenges are preventable or treatable—especially when people step in to help.
That’s where the Maryville Lions Club comes in.
What It’s Like to Be a Lion
Before deciding to join anything, it helps to see what it actually feels like to be part of it.
Here are a few videos that provide a real sense of the experience—neighbors serving together, building friendships, and making a difference in ways that are both simple and meaningful:
Being a Lion isn’t about titles or recognition. It’s about showing up—serving your neighbors, working alongside others who care, and knowing that what you do matters.
Part of Something Bigger
While our work is deeply local here in Blount County, it’s also part of something much larger.
This video shows how Lions around the world are doing the same kind of work—protecting sight and improving lives in communities everywhere:
Lions Around the World
When you join the Maryville Lions Club, you’re not just helping your neighbors—you’re becoming part of a global network committed to service, with vision care at the heart of that mission.
Local impact. Global reach.
Who We’re Looking For
If you’ve been following along this month and found yourself thinking, “I’d like to help… I’m just not sure how,” you’re exactly who we’re looking for.
We’re not looking for specialists.
We’re looking for people who:
Care about their community
Want to make a practical difference locally
Believe small actions can change someone’s future
That might look like helping with vision-focused service, supporting outreach in schools, or simply showing up and being part of a team that serves others.
No medical background required. Just a willingness to help.
What Membership Actually Looks Like
Let’s be honest—people don’t join because of vague ideas. They join when they understand what they’re saying yes to.
Here’s what you can expect:
A manageable time commitment that fits into real life
Opportunities to serve right here in Blount County
A chance to work alongside people who genuinely care
The ability to turn concern into real, visible impact
And yes—there are meetings. But more importantly, there is a purpose behind them.
Why It Matters Now
The need hasn’t gone away.
As our community grows and ages, the demand for vision support continues to increase. Every screening, every pair of glasses, every moment of restored independence happens because someone in this community chose to step forward.
