The Maryville Lions Club recently took part in a meaningful community event partnering with A Place To Stay during their Street Outreach Service day (SOS) at the New Providence Presbyterian Church serving the underprivileged community of Blount County. Many other non-profit organizations participated as well. Each organization brought essential resources directly to those in need. This effort highlights how local organizations can work together to improve health and well-being in their communities.

Bringing Vision Care to the Community

Vision problems often go unnoticed or untreated in underserved populations due to lack of access or financial barriers. The Maryville Lions Club addresses this gap by providing several vision-related services during the SOS day:

  • Distribution of reading glasses and sunglasses

Many adults in the community received reading glasses to help with daily tasks such as reading, cooking, and working. Sunglasses were also handed out to protect eyes from harmful UV rays.

  • Vision screening for children

Early detection of vision issues in children is critical for their development and academic success. The Lions conducted screenings to identify children who might need further eye care.

  • Scheduling appointments for the Lions Smoky Mountain Charity Vision Clinic

The clinic, held monthly in Fountain City, offers comprehensive eye exams and affordable glasses. The Lions helped community members schedule appointments, ensuring continued care beyond the outreach event.

  • Addressing Food Insecurity with Nutritious Packages

Alongside vision care, the Maryville Lions Club distributed fortified food packages to attendees. These packages included:

    • Pasta with tomato sauce

    • Protein bars

    • Granola bars

These services not only provide immediate relief but also connect individuals with ongoing support for their eye health and providing food with a nutritional value and ease of preparation, helping families facing food insecurity maintain a balanced diet.

The Maryville Lions also support other organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Parks & Rec Dept.

The Importance of Collaboration in Community Outreach

The success of this event depended on the collaboration between the Maryville Lions Club, A Place To Stay, New Providence Presbyterian Church as well as many other non-profit organizations. Each organization brought unique strengths.

This partnership model demonstrates how combining resources and expertise can maximize impact and reach more people in need.

Every contribution helps build a stronger, healthier community.

Looking Ahead: Continuing the Mission

The Maryville Lions Club plans to maintain its commitment to serving Blount County through regular vision clinics and outreach activities. By continuing to provide essential health services and food support, they aim to reduce barriers and improve lives one person at a time. Together, we can create a community where everyone has the resources to thrive.
