The recent Keep Blount Beautiful Recycling Event brought together community members and local organizations at the Blount County Courthouse parking lot to support environmental sustainability. Among the participants, a member of the Maryville Lions Club played a key role by collecting and recycling eyeglasses and sunglasses. This event showcased how different groups can collaborate to reduce waste and promote recycling in meaningful ways.

Diverse Recycling Opportunities at the Event

The event featured several organizations, each focusing on a specific type of recyclable material:

  • Maryville Lions Club collected used eyeglasses and sunglasses to help those in need and reduce waste.

  • Paper Bee Gone provided shredding services for confidential paper documents.

  • Scott Recycling accepted electronic waste, including old computers, tvs, etc

  • Goodwill collected clothing and household goods for reuse and resale.

  • Terracycle gathered used oral care products and Brita water filters for specialized recycling.

  • Household Batteries were accepted this year for the first time, including alkaline, button cell, lithium-ion, lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, zinc-carbon, and nickel-metal hydride batteries.

This wide range of accepted items made it easy for residents to responsibly dispose of many types of waste in one place.

The Importance of Eyeglass Recycling

The Maryville Lions Club’s role in collecting eyeglasses highlights a unique form of recycling that benefits both the environment and the community. Eyeglasses that are no longer used often end up in landfills, but items such as reading glasses can be refurbished and distributed to people who cannot afford new pairs. The prescription glasses are recycled for their metal content. This reduces waste and improves quality of life for many individuals.

The Lions Club has a long history of supporting vision-related causes. By collecting eyeglasses at events like this, they help extend the life of these items and support vision care programs locally and abroad.

How Battery Recycling Protects the Environment

Household batteries contain chemicals and metals that can be harmful if disposed of improperly. Collecting and recycling batteries prevents these substances from contaminating soil and water. This year’s inclusion of battery collection at the event was a significant step toward safer waste management in Blount County.

Residents brought in various types of batteries, including:

  • Alkaline batteries used in everyday devices

  • Button cell batteries found in watches and small electronics

  • Lithium-ion batteries common in rechargeable gadgets

  • Lead-acid batteries from vehicles and equipment

  • Nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries from rechargeable tools and devices

  • Zinc-carbon batteries used in low-drain devices

Proper recycling of these batteries ensures valuable materials are recovered and hazardous waste is minimized.

Community Impact and Support

The event also accepted donations to support Keep Blount Beautiful’s ongoing programs. These contributions help fund educational initiatives, cleanup projects, and future recycling events. The collaboration between community members, local organizations, and volunteers demonstrates a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.

Events like this encourage residents to think about their waste habits and provide convenient ways to recycle items that are often difficult to dispose of properly. The presence of multiple organizations in one location made it easier for people to participate and learn about different recycling options.

Practical Tips for Recycling at Home

To build on the momentum from the event, here are some practical tips for recycling at home:

  • Sort recyclables carefully to avoid contamination. Check local guidelines for accepted materials.

  • Collect used eyeglasses and donate them to organizations like the Lions Club or local vision charities.

  • Store used batteries safely in a container and take them to designated recycling events or drop-off points.

  • Shred sensitive documents before recycling paper to protect personal information.

  • Donate clothing and household goods to thrift stores or charities instead of throwing them away.

  • Recycle electronics responsibly by using certified e-waste recyclers.

By following these steps, individuals can reduce waste and support community recycling efforts year-round.
